Agatha Christie (Why I'm Obsessed)
I remember the day my eyes were opened to the genius of Agatha Christie.
I was about twelve and maybe a little young to be reading Agatha. I was addicted to Nancy Drew novels; I had read each of those sixty-four books about three times apiece. Safe to say, it was time to find a new book.
My grandmother pulled up into our driveway and I ran to meet her. Pulling open the passenger side door, I peeked into the car. Handing me a stack of black, hardbound books with beautiful gold lettering, my grandmother explained that they were mystery novels and that I should try one out.
One turned into eighty-one.
Years later, here I am still obsessed with good ole’ Agatha. You’re probably thinking “Okaaay but aren’t you over it yet? How can you re-read those books constantly? Don’t they get boring?
Short answer: No, I’m not over it and probably never will be, I have visions of myself in a wheelchair, hunched over Ten Little Indians, reading it as if it’s the first time I ever laid eyes on it. It’s probably part of my DNA at this point. (Future children, look out. Bedtime stories from me will not be for the faint of heart).
I’ve even found myself talking like I’m straight out of an A.C. mystery. I’m American, and yet I occasionally talk like I’m British. (Not even a British accent, just phrases and words. 😂 This probably has something to do with having read the books from a young, impressionable age).
Now you’re probably still wondering: Why?
I can’t fully explain it myself. I feel almost connected with Agatha Christie the person, not the author. I’ve read up on her life to the point where I actually feel as if I knew her. I laughed as I read of her travels in Come Tell Me How You Live, I found tears in my eyes as I read one of her Mary Westmacott novels that drew direct parallels to the trauma and pain of her failed first marriage.
Her novels told of good and evil, the ultimate battle. She crafts relatable characters. (Not the criminals, obvi 😂)
I will probably never get over Agatha Christie mysteries. I am slowly collecting all of them. She has inspired me to try a little bit of mystery writing myself, (but nothing publish yet 😉).
If you find a book or series you love, don’t be ashamed to read them over and over until you have them memorized! Finding something you love that deeply should be special. Have a nice copy of your favorite book. Recommend it to other people. Pick it up when you can’t find anything to read.
A dependable book is just about the best thing in the world, in my honest readers opinion.
