Five Hiking Tips for Newbies

With Spring coming up, we’re ready to head outside and get some fresh air! Check out this list to optimize your hiking experience.

Step One: Wear Correct Footwear

Having worked in the shoe industry myself, good, sturdy hiking shoes are a must. Even you’re fairly certain of your terrain and already know the path, hiking boots are key. There is always a chance you can slip on the wet path or trip on a tree root. Having boots that come around your ankle ensure that your ankles are stable and in no danger of twisting. For example, if you plan to hike a trail with rocks and hills, wear boots.

(If you're walking on a man-made trail, with concrete bridges and a clear trail, it's okay to wear tennis shoes or hiking sandals, as paths like this are most likely kept clear by groundskeepers).

Step Two: Wear Correct Clothing

Being underdressed (or overdressed) on a trail, can be miserable. If you don’t layer correctly, you could end up being cold, or hot depending on the weather.

Your clothing should be durable, yet light. Things such as flannels and tall socks are worn in the cooler months, along with jeans or kakis. Leggings can be worn, unless you are going on a challenging trail. If hiking through rough terrain, your leggings could get caught on something and tear.

In summer, shorts are acceptable, just be careful you don’t brush up against any dubious looking plants. If you’re not comfortable hiking in shorts or are worried about bug bites, you can always opt out for capris. For guys, they can wear shorts, as their type of shorts usually hit the knee and will provide enough coverage.

Brands such as Columbia and Patagonia are perfect for hiking.

Step Three: Stay Alert

Remember, when hiking you are generally in the middle of the woods, most times in the middle of nowhere. Remaining alert and taking note of your surroundings is always key.

Step Four: Pack Water and Snacks

If you plan on going on a long hike, anywhere from 2–5 hours, even days depending on how advanced a hiker you are, you’ll need food and most importantly water. Bringing food is also a good precaution in case you were to get lost. Water should be brought during any hike no matter how long the trail.

Step Five: Have Fun!

The whole idea of hiking is to have fun! Whether going with one person, or a whole group, hiking is enjoyable! Bring snacks, set up a picnic off the trail, making sure to clean up any wrappers or water bottles to preserve the beauty of the trail. Enjoying nature is something we all should do, in warm and cool weather alike!

So get out there and hit the trail!
