Should I Pick a Niche?

Picking a niche is something most writers do.

Some pick it without even thinking about it, and others brainstorm for ages.

I fall somehere between the two.

But where do you fall?

Do you already have a niche you feel confident in? Are you comfortable not even having a niche? Or are you agonizing over what to pick?

Take a deep breath and a step back. Picking a niche can be hard, but it shouldn’t be that stressful thought that keeps you up at night.

Personally, I found that I didn’t want to only have one niche. But part of me wondered if having more than one would pile up and become stressful. Having more than one niche doesn’t have to be hard.

Narrowing it Down

First things first is narrowing the field.

Realistically speaking, you can’t write about everything under the sun. Nobody knows that much. When selecting a niche, you need to pick something you feel comfortable writing about. Also making sure that you familiar with your niche is a key thing. Sticking to what you know is going to be easier in the long run.

Know your Niche

If your a stay-at-home mom, and you want to blog, blog about motherhood and childcare.

If your a teacher, specialize in down-to-earth teaching tips.

College student? Talk about the pros and cons of college.

But what about two topics?

What if your a parent and a gardener? I would read a parenting/gardening blog in a heartbeat.

The list goes on and on.

But What About…

But what if you feel like you don’t fit into a specific category? What if you have multiple passions and interests?

Simple. Just write. Write what you know and love and it will work out. Whether its one topic or five, just write. No procrastinating.

I’m not saying its all sunshine and rainbows, its hard to gain some momentum. But just testing the waters is a good place to start.

Its easy to overthink writing. You get the idea in your head that you need a ton of followers to be a success, or a ton of views.

Its better to have loyal readers than random people who follow you just for a follow-back.

You want people who reach your content and walk away feeling happy, enlightened, emboldened.

In Conclusion

Writing can be hard. We’ve all stared writers block in the face at some point.

At some point, you just need to ‘take the bit between your teeth’ and run with it. Whether your picking one niche or three, you just have to try. Remaining consistent when blogging is ideal, but life gets in the way and that’s okay.

Your writing will evolve over time. Writing when your twenty compared to writing at forty is very different.

Life progresses, things change and that’s fine. Write what you know and love, you’ll be thankful you did.
